**To put this whole post in perspective for new readers, or for anybody who forgot. I owed $30k in student debt by the time I finished grad school. These posts describe that struggle: My $30,000 Student Loan Mistake & Student Debt Denial**
I love getting calls from my Alumni Association when I’m spending a quiet evening at home with my bf. Love it so much I’ve drafted the following letter to let them know exactly how I feel:
Dear Alumni Association from my Beloved Alma Mater,
Thank you so much for taking the time to call, e-mail and send letters via USPS. Since you’ve taken the time to stalk me via numerous modes of communication, I’d like to offer you a candid explanation of why I’ve been dodging you like the plague. YOU ALREADY TOOK ALL OF MY MONEY! Seriously, I don’t have any left. You even got money I didn’t actually have. That’s right, I begged, borrow and
stoleOK I didn’t steal, but with tuition as high as yours I’m sure some people do, to be able to pay your obscene tuition and fees. Tuition and fees (and a buttload of interest) It took me multiple years to payoff. During those years I didn’t go out, lived in a cardboard box and ate Alpo. Here’s how it works, I will not continue to send you money unless you continue to send degrees. Sure, I’d like to help other needy students obtain a fabulous education. But for the price of one degree at your fancy pants institution, I could send 5 students to state school. A state school that will likely give them a similar foundation for success with a much smaller price tag.
In all seriousness, I have love for you, but you’ve got to give me little time to, “heal” from the financial scars attending your prestigious University has imposed on my psyche and wallet.
All the Best,
KK, BA, MSSW, LMSW (the more letters you have the more you pay, Right?)
